When was the last time you got to repel off of a 30 foot tower? How about out of a helicopter 85 feet in the air? Well if you ask any member of the Century High School JROTC program, they will be able to tell you, Tuesday Oct. 21.
49 members of the program left that Tuesday morning to go to Camp Frettered, Maryland. The trip, which was open to any member of the program, was intended to promote teamwork and to help over come fears, as well as learn what its like to be in thos situations.
When they first arrived, they were split up into two groups: land navigation and repelling. The land navigation group had a point on a map that they had to find using their sense of direction and compass to reach that point.
At the repelling tower, the students learned how o make a safety seat by tying a rope around themselves to make a seat. Then they got to strap up and repel down a 30 foot tower to the ground.
Once the group braved the tower, their next mission was to repel out of a hovering helicopter, 85 feet off the ground. Senior Cory Tye said, “it was just like what you see in the movies.”
When asked why he joined the program, Tye said, “Honestly I didn’t want to take Chem. II and this was the only class that was available, but it actually turned out great for me because I love it.”
First Sergeant Walt Sitarek, who attended the trip with the students, said, “I thought it went well, we didn’t get to do all the things that we have done in the past because of time constraints, such as repel from each apparatus over and over, but all-in-all it went very well.”
