The return of fall brings the return of competitive clubs like the Chemistry Team who is preparing for the Chemathon occurring in April 2009.
Sophomore Alexa Prettyman said, “It is really fun and we get to do the experiment with out the lab reports.”
With a team of 12 members, the practices started in September. Students join for all sorts of different reasons. Junior Andrew Glaser said, “One of my friends convinced me to join and it has been fun ever since.” They practice once a week, working on labs and paper and pencil events.
The competitions involve all types of Chemistry and allow the members to work a broad range of topics. After performing the labs, team members then broke into the areas in which they will be working. “Most members find out what works best for them and that becomes their event for the competition,” said Chemistry Team advisor Buck Ferrin.
There are two teams also within the Chemistry team. There is a level one and a level two team. The Chemistry I students are automatically on the level one team and the AP Chemistry students are automatically on the level two. The students who are in Chemistry II have a choice.
Team member junior Hayley Maderia said, “It hasn’t really started yet, but we made goo last week, and it was a lot of fun.”
