Infamous Guidance Counselor Pamela Boan is leaving Century High School and will be working at Manchester Valley High School starting on Jan. 5, 2009.
Beside Principal Andrew Cockly and his secretaries, Boan was the first person hired to work at CHS when it opened in 2001; she also created the few Master Schedules for the school.
Along with being a counselor, Boan also has the title of Coordinator and Liaison for guidance, and is a member of many committees such as Student Assistance Program, Crisis Team Committee and the Business Advisory Commitee. Boan also serves as the Guidance Department Chairperson.
Principal Jan Soth has worked with Boan for the seven years that she has been at CHS, and two years prior to that. “I’m sad that she’s leaving. We have been a part of the Instructional Leadership Team together and there are only a few original members left because people have left. They have been promoted to better and newer things, as will Boan. She’s all about the kids and building relationships with them. She has a legacy at CHS that she can take with her. She is going to be missed by us,” Soth said.
CHS Girls’ Tennis Coach is also listed on Boan’s resume. Sports have always been an important part of her life. She said, “It is nice to spend time with some of the students at CHS who enjoy sports as much as I do. I love to get to know the girls and boys tennis players really well.” She has made a lasting positive impact on her players, who are going to miss this season.
Senior Maggie Rees was coached by Boan, who was they key to team bonding. Rees said, “She was the one who brought our team together. She was a great coach and a lot of fun! [Boan] is one of the best people I know. She’s so caring and compassionate toward everyone. I’m really going to miss her.”
Leaving CHS, Boan has a trail of memories, as well as impressions. “My favorite part about my job is working with and getting to know my students. I particularly enjoy working with scheduling and college planning. I feel truly blessed to be a small part of [the students] high school experience and hope that I can help them make good decisions for their future,” Boan stated.
Peer Facilitator senior Kyra Whittenburg loves the joy of being around Boan every day when working with her. Whittenburg stated, “She’s really nice and always smiling. I’m really going to miss her!”
Guidance Register Hope McKeiver was originally hired by Boan, who has left a lasting impact on her. “She helps me so much! She is very caring a trustworthy, I think she is going to do well [at MVHS]. She gets along really well with students and she is used to opening a school so she will be very successful,” McKeiver said.
During her time at MVHS, Boan will be working with Principal Randy Clark and his Office Manager Donna Gable. Until MVHS is finished being built in June 2009, they will be working in a portable at North Carroll High School. After she leaves, Support Counselor George Wunder will be the full time guidance counselor for ninth grade and Guidance Counselor Carolyn Hunsicker will be the Department Chairperson for guidance.
